Finding Hosting that Fits Your Needs

There are many different sites on the web for finding cheap (or good) hosting for your website or blog. I want to talk about http://www.webhostingchoice.com.

One of the first things that strikes my fancy about this site is the up-front search feature that allows you to enter your preferred maximum monthly cost, setup fee, disk space, and bandwidth requirements. After that, just hit the submit button and off you go! They also have an advanced search feature, which gives you the power to search by other features, uptime guarantee, and many other options (including payment options, including PayPal).

There was one glitch that I found with the site. It gives you a link where you can submit host companies for inclusion, but I received a fatal error when doing this. For me, as long as the search feature is working it's all good.

One other highlight: they have a decent FAQ for newbies, and even a short primer on how to spot potential scams by hosting companies with less-than-scrupulous intentions.

I would recommend this site if you are looking for a new web host. Very nice indeed.

Name That Color

Have you ever wanted to know the name of a color when all you had was the RGB hex value?

According to Chirag Mehta's Name That Color tool, #90a090 is nearest to "mantle" (#8B9C90). The same tool has an alphabetical list of over 1,500 colors and a Hue/Saturation/Value (HSV) color picker and it's licensed cc-by.

Adobe Flex

Adobe Flex is a new medium for creating rich internet applications (RIA). Well, to be honest, it has been around for a while, but is really only now gaining the kind of support it deserves. It is a Flash-based technology, but it is not Flash, although a Flex application is built on the Adobe Flash Player. The best way to understand what it can do is to look at a few RIAs developed with it. Explore some great samples at http://flex.org/showcase/. My particular favourites are: http://taggraph.com/. It creates links between the tags on Flickr.Staying on the subject of photos, splashup provides ‘Photoshop-esque’ image editing application right in your browser window. This is interesting as we really cannot be many years away from the time when none of us buy software—but simply buy time to use whatever application (or combination of modules) we need, to perform whatever task we have—online.

Alternative Energy Marketplace

Alternative Energy Marketplace

Alternative Energy Marketplace is a new site I have just launched that features news, research and a forum to post your opinions on alternative and renewable energy.  It is no secret that fossil fuels are becoming less economical - anyone with a gas tank can tell you that!  AEM explores the emerging market for biofuels, solar, hydro and other sustainable, environmentally friendly energy sources.  Check it out, and post your thoughts in the forum!

Adding An Icon to your website

Surfing the Internet, chances are you have came across a website with an icon appearing in the address bar or next to a bookmark like the following:

Well, if you've been wondering about it, these are FAVICONS.

According to W3C a favicon is:

...a graphic image (icon) associated with a particular Web page and/or Web site. Many recent user agents (such as graphical browsers and newsreaders) display them as a visual reminder of the Web site identity in the address bar or in tabs

The icon must be 16x16 pixels or 32x32 pixels, using either 8-bit or 24-bit colors. The format of the image must be one of PNG (a W3C standard), GIF, or ICO.

With that been said, the question is, how can you add one? The solution is very simple and can be easily implemented online.

1 - Pick a picture that you like and would like to add to your website

2 - Go to FavIcon From Pics, browse to your picture, select it and click "generate FavIcon.ico"

3 - Click "Download FavIcon" and open the package. favicon.ico is included in it.
4 - Upload the favicon.ico file to the folder on your web site where you have the web page.
5- Open your webpage HTML file and Add the following line between <head></head>

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://yourwebsite.com/favicon.ico" type="image/vnd.microsoft.icon"> for .ico files

or

<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="yourwebsite.com/image.png"> for png files

6- Save the webpage and upload it

That it. Enjoy!!!

FREE TEMPLATES FIXED

It was brought to my attention yesterday that the links to the download pages of the free CSS templates were all broken. What are the chances that every single one be broken?!

Well, as it goes the likelihood is quite high if you decide to move the folder and forget to update the links!

So here I announce it is all ifxed and you can get back to downloading all the free CSS templates I have to offer you.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

New website for Aegis Estate Agents

247 Creative is delighted to announce that aegis-uk.com has gone live - this is a new website for Sunbury-based estate agent Aegis, and provides details about the company , and of course, full listings of the properties available for sale or rental.

The brief was to design a website that was extremely easy to use by visitors, and gave the company a powerful solution to manage numerous aspects of their business. To that end, we have built a content management system that features an AJAX-enabled administration area to control all the functionality and content on the site. Users can be kept up to date on the latest properties on offer through an RSS news feed, by subscribing to an HTML email newsletter, or by browsing the relevant listings.

The site also has a number of advanced components, such as PDF property information brochures which are generated on-the-fly, and a "property gallery" that can display a full-screen slideshow of homes, suitable for display on the company's in-branch plasma screens.

The design has been based around the company's existing branding, and is clean, bright and easily-navigable.

The site has been built with best practices for usability, accessibility and search engine optimisation in mind, and as such features fully W3C standards-compliant XHTML and CSS coding, and is based on a comprehensive bespoke management system which uses the PHP scripting language and a scalable MySQL database architecture.

We are hugely pleased with the system we have developed for Aegis estate agents, and wish the company every success with their new online presence.

If you are an estate agent or lettings agency, why not talk to 247 Creative to see how we can enable your business to take full advantage of the Web?

Driving Traffic to Your New Web Store

Author: Zach Thompson

Driving traffic to your new web store is an important feature to success for your new small home business. Starting a web store is made virtually easy on the internet with so many companies offering affiliations and free web stores to promote their specific products. In order to drive traffic to your new store, it is important to have a good product or set of products. One of the fastest growing industries is the wellness industry. When you set up your new web store, make certain that it is wellness industry based.

One trick to drive traffic to your web store is through your email signature. Your email signature is a powerful tool. Friends and family naturally forward humor and other helpful links to their friends and co-workers. These in turn, forward it to a few people that they know. It snowballs into one email being sent to virtually hundreds of people in a very quick amount of time. All you had to do was send the original non-spam email. Go through your email host and account to find the selection for email signature. On the signature put a friendly little note and click here link that goes directly to new web store. You will be amazed at how many people will now know that you're on the internet and visit your site.

Post flyers in your community. You can post simple flyers that have your new web store address and cute message on it. Many people will visit out of curiosity. Just check with local business owners before putting flyers on others autos. You don't want to make anyone mad with your advertising. You can also check with store owners, community centers, libraries, colleges and even religious facilities about posting a small flyer about your store. Many will not mind a bit and you can often do this for free.

Have a bumper sticker made with your web store information. Put this on the back of your car bumper. Ask friends and families if you can have one made for their cars as well. If people are worried about glue or permanence, you can have customized magnetic bumper stickers made that are temporary. This will keep cars from having permanent stickers or getting glue damage to make it more likely that others will be willing to have one placed on their car. Cars are a terrific way to advertise your web store to others. Many people will memorize or write down the web address to visit out of curiosity. Once you have the traffic there, your products will virtually sell themselves.

Join a manual surf program. These programs give you traffic credits based on the number of sites that you manually surf. There are many times that people are reading the pages that they are surfing. The next thing you know, they've seen your new web store several times and end up visiting again out of curiosity or because they have an interest in your wellness products. For either reason, you are driving traffic to your site that is real people that naturally want to know what it is that your new web store has to offer.
